If you visit Lisbon in 6 days, you will have ants in your pants after 3 or 4 days. During our private tours, our local guides like to give you expert advice on what you can see around Lisbon. It’s enough to make your mouth water and opt for a car rental in Lisbon. There are plenty of ideas for travelling from Lisbon, as you can see from our post on road trips in Portugal :
1- Visit the Sintra Natural Park and the entire north coast of Lisbon, discover Lisbon’s incredible vineyards with our guide Sylvain.
2- Cross the river Tagus, be amazed by the Serra da Arrabida and enjoy the many activities that can be found near Lisbon, in the middle of nature. Not forgetting the magnificent beaches of Caparica and Sesimbra.
3- Discover the mythical cities around Lisbon such as Obidos or Evora. And why not make a loop with Andalusia by choosing a car rental between Lisbon and Spain with the cities of Seville or Malaga.
4- Make the choice to visit Lisbon without choosing to sleep there. Even if the public transport network is well developed, a car hire near Lisbon will save you time.
5- Make the choice to try the best restaurants near Lisbon by renting a car. And yes, even if we have some very good restaurant tips in Lisbon, we are convinced that you will find your happiness in the countryside, whether it be in terms of fish or meat restaurants.
Nevertheless, the negative points for a rental car in Lisbon are not negligible and it is good to take them into account when making a decision :
1- Lisbon is a city that is difficult to reach by car as it is very concentrated with narrow streets. There are not many parking spaces but you can always park cheaply in private car parks. The other tip ? Opt for a compact car or find accommodation in Lisbon with parking included.
2- Renting a car in Lisbon at the beginning of your stay is not necessarily relevant. Because the visit to the historic centre is easy to do on foot and the taxi/Uber option does not affect your budget. Do you only plan to visit Lisbon and Belem, the Sintra palaces and push your discovery as far as Cascais in your itinerary ? Honestly, car rental is a plan B. For a long stay (more than 4 days), we therefore recommend that you rent after you have fully enjoyed Lisbon.
3- Lisbon City Hall’s medium-term plan is to limit car traffic in its city centre as much as possible. Parking spaces in the streets are disappearing more and more.
4- Renting a car is like booking a flight ticket. The longer you book in advance, the better the deal. Summer periods are the most popular. We therefore recommend that you plan ahead to save more money. Check out the different rental options below :
Welcome to Lisbon ! You’ve just arrived in the Portuguese capital, but you’re not planning to visit it (too bad !). The aim is to explore the country by opting for a car rental (which is undoubtedly the best solution).
No need to drive miles, the main car rental agencies in Lisbon are located at the airport. They are located just after the metro station.
Among those on site, we recommend Budget, which offers good prices when you book in advance and above all renews its fleet of cars every year. A guarantee of safety when travelling in Portugal.
When it comes to finding the best car hire deals in Lisbon, nothing beats price comparators. This business being a real jungle, I personally trust experts like AutoEurope. This company has been known for optimal service since 1954! I like the ease of consulting prices and their transparency. There are no credit card charges and you can cancel up to 48 hours before the vehicle is picked up ! Last but not least, the most important point is their very efficient customer service.
You may also be wondering if there is a car rental in Lisbon with no deposit ? Yes, with the Interrent key’n’go system that saves you precious time. No more waiting because you don’t have to go through the counter, no deposit, you get your keys from an automatic distributor. Interrent key’n’go prices can be consulted directly on the AutoEurope website.

As you can see on the Sixt booking platform, there are two car hire offices in the centre of Lisbon :
1- The first office (Rua Andrade Corvo 31) is located near the PICOAS metro station, between the Saldanha district and the Marques de Pombal business district. It is open every day between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm.
2- The second office is located in the heart of the most prestigious avenue in Lisbon : Avenida da Liberdade (number 185). A good location if you live in the Bairro Alto, Principe Real, Sant’ana districts. It is open on weekdays between 8am and 8pm.
Finally, to conclude on this topic, Avis has two car rental offices in the centre. The first one in Marques de Pombal. Located on rua Castilho 167E, it is open on weekdays between 8am and 12.30pm and 2.30pm and 6pm. On Saturdays and Sundays it is open between 9am and 1pm.
The second office is located in Praça martim Moniz, within the Hotel Mundial. This is the best possible location in the heart of the historic centre. If you are staying in Mouraria, Intendente, Graça, Baixa or Chiado, you will only be a few minutes walk away. The only drawback is that it is only open during the week between 9am & 1pm and 4pm & 6pm.

Many motorways in Portugal have automatic electronic tolls, there are no toll stations, especially in Algarve. When you book your car, ask for your « VIA VERDE » box, which will allow you to drive with complete peace of mind. Because without this box, you are flashed and you have to go to a payment office. A step that you want to avoid when you want to make the best of a well-deserved holiday.
