More and more people are dreaming of living and working in Portugal, where life seems gentler than elsewhere and where you can enjoy a great climate for a good part of the year. However, it's hard to find a job if you don't speak the language (but find out how to overcome this). Unless you choose to work in Lisbon, which is a tourist city, and where you can get by with a good level of English. If you're not necessarily looking for a career, but just want to improve your language skills and discover more about the country's culture, no problem.
Here are some tips to show you the way and work in Portugal :
Whether you want to work in Lisbon or in Portugal, the first thing you need to do is to get your TIN : the Tax Identification Number or Número de Contribuinte. This number is your key : thanks to it, you can DO ANYTHING. For example: join a sports club, subscribe to an internet service, in short, all the little things you will need to do during your stay in Portugal.
To get it, you have to go to one of the offices of the Lisbon tax administration (Finanças) or to one of the Loja do Cidadão, an entity that centralises many administrative formalities.
Bring along :
With your Número de Contribuinte in your pocket, you are on your way to the next steps!
Whether you are a citizen of the European Union or not, the documents required to open a bank account in Portugal are the same:
While waiting for your registration with the SNS, apply for a Health Insurance. Your medical expenses will thus be covered initially. Whether you are working or doing an internship in Portugal, it is best to register with the SNS. To do this, simply go to the nearest health centre with your identity card or passport, your carte vitale and a document proving your residence in Portugal.
My recommendation : go early.
The sectors that recruit traditionally remain tourism, hotels and restaurants, while those of telecommunications and IT tend to grow.
You have to be prepared for a big pay cut.
For students looking for an internship in Lisbon, there is nothing better than word of mouth : don’t hesitate to ask your teachers, they know which companies are most likely to work with students.
Check the local media, such as Expresso, which is the main job search magazine. In Lisbon, the Diáro de Noticias will be your bible, while in the south of the country, the Correio da Manha has many job offers, mainly in the service sector. The latter is also a good place to find the latest internship opportunities in Portugal.
Finally, you will find on the internet several specialised websites such as :
Various Facebook groups, such as Trabalho em Lisboa which means « job in Lisbon ».
